2021 Reflections

A new year brings dreams, excitement, and goals, usually with a long list of “improvements” to be made. After our first season with a cut flower farm, we definitely have a list of changes for our next season.

To say we’ve learned a lot would be an understatement. Every day there was either an exciting discovery in the field or an unfamiliar issue to tackle. We scoured the internet for ideas and answers, we reached out to other flower farmers, and did our own experiments. While there is much to learn, we still want to reflect on the positives along with our new goals.

Highlights of the 2021 flower season:

- Overwintering ranunculus and anemones

- Watching the seed to flower process

- Having an abundance of flowers for harvesting from June-September (succession planting for the win!)

- Community support from our CSA Flower Members

- Successful farmers markets and pop ups

Areas to improve for the 2022 flower season:

- Staying on top of all the weeds!

- Managing aphids (These lil’ guys are nasty beasts in the early season.)

- Transferring plants outside too early in spring (We couldn’t resist our excitement!)

- Keeping up with all the water needs on extreme hot summer days

- Becoming more efficient making market bouquets

What we are excited about in 2022:

- Welcoming spring with different varieties of tulips and daffodils

- Increasing our ranunculus and anemones from 150 plants last season to 1000 this season

- Experimenting with new and exciting flowers for next season’s bouquets

- Doubling our growing space

- Our new frost cloth to protect little plants from chilly temps

We look forward to another season with you. Happy New Year!
